Who Can Swim?
The Scotts Mill Sea Dragons are a neighborhood summer swim team, located in Apex, NC. The team is made up of approximately 130 swimmers, with ages ranging from four to eighteen years old. Membership for the team is available to all individuals who have a family membership at the Scotts Mill Recreation Center.
The Sea Dragons are a member of the Tarheel Swimming Association (TSA). The TSA is made up of approximately 8,000 swimmers from 70 neighborhood swim teams from across Wake County. TSA sets the schedule and makes the rules governing our swim meets. The Scotts Mill Sea Dragons achieved full TSA membership in 2001 after competing as an exhibition team in 2000.
The Scotts Mill Sea Dragons welcome all prospective members to join the team! We have swimmers ranging from novice ability to those who compete for high school and club teams, and all are valued members of the team. The Sea Dragons emphasize sportsmanship, team spirit, and personal improvement through hard work. If you are interested in joining our team, please contact a coach or board member for more information. We look forward to seeing you this summer!!
All children 18 and under who are living in Scotts Mill are invited to join the swim team. Ages are determined by the child's age on June 1, 2011. Families in The Green and Magnolia must have a membership at the Scotts Mill recreation center to join the team.
Children ages 6 and under MUST be able to swim 15 yards unassisted to be on the Sea Dragons. Unassisted means they are able to swim 15 yards with a coach standing on the far side of the finish line rope. Children 6 and under who need assistance from a coach should register for the Junior Dragons. The coaching staff will be evaluating all children 6 and under the first week of practice and may move swimmers who need a little more assistance to the Junior Dragons.
Ages 7-10 must be able to swim 25 yards, and 11 and up must swim 50 yards.
The Sea Dragons are excited to offer this program for aspiring Sea Dragons. Please note that the Junior Dragons ARE part of the Sea Dragons. But this new program is for all kids 6 and under who need a coach in the water in order to reach the 15 yard rope. Minimum standard for a Junior Dragon is he or she must be potty trained, be at least 3 years of age as of June 1, and willing to jump in the water to a coach in the deep end of the pool.
Any Junior Dragon who gains the ability to reach the 15 yard rope at any time during the season will graduate to the Sea Dragons at the discretion of the coaching staff. Likewise, any child in the 6 and under program may be moved to the Junior Dragons until they are ready to move up to the 6 and under group.
Junior Dragons will NOT participate in meets, and Junior Dragon parents are NOT required to volunteer at meets (unless they have another child in an older age group). And all Junior Dragons will receive a trophy at the end of the season, just the like the big Sea Dragons.
